Overviews and Highlights

The Massachusetts Bays Program (MBP) became a part of the National Estuary Program in 1990. Stretching from the New Hampshire border to the tip of Cape Cod, the 50 coastal communities in the MBP region are home to over 1.7 million people. Because of its large size and geographic diversity, the area is divided into five sub-regions that are served by regional coordinators working to respond to local needs and assist with coastal planning and project implementation. Hosted by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management, the MBP's mission is to protect and enhance the coastal health and heritage of Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays. The program's priorities are to protect and enhance coastal habitats and shellfish resources, reduce and prevent stormwater and wastewater pollution, work towards sustainable land use and growth, manage marine invasive species, monitor marine waters, and adapt for the projected impacts of climate change.
