Mitigation of RRISSC Moderate Risk Areas

For the Moderate risk ratings, a review of the land uses/process relations/ and locations, management prescriptions can be recommended which address these moderate risk areas/processes. Prescribing specific management practices for the large variety of settings one might encounter is well beyond the scope of WARSSS, which is already an extensive assessment methodology. As one example, a season-long grazing system in poor condition on a C4 stream type and willow riparian vegetation, may result in a recommended mitigation of a deferred/rotation grazing practice with spring riparian pasture grazing not to exceed 10-15% utilization of new willow growth. This example of mitigation would initially provide a better management choice than excluding grazing or the expensive option of mechanical stabilization of streambanks unless subsequent monitoring indicated poor results from the recommended change in grazing management.
