Latest updates
Both BASINS 4 and 3.1 have an automatic update feature in the software to indicate to the user that an update is available. The latest update for BASINS 4 is dated May 2010. The latest update for BASINS 3.1 is Update 8
released November 2006.
Data from the web
New and updated datasets (see metadata) have been added to the data download directory for each 8-digit watershed or HUC in the lower 48 states, Alaska (19), Hawaii (20), and Puerto Rico with the U.S. Virgin Islands (21). Data by HUCs can be found on the web. Use "Surf Your Watershed" to find and locate HUCs. Numerous types of data may be found by HUC, including 303d, NHD (National Hydrography Dataset), DEM (Digital Elevation Model) census, GIRAS (landuse/landcover), and PCS (Permit Compliance System). Note that not all data types may be available for all HUCs.
Updated meteorologic files, with updated data to 2009, can be downloaded by station number.
The following links provide metadata ("data about data") for the data type. Additional metadata can be found at
http://water.epa.gov/scitech/datait/models/basins/metadata.cfm.
The DEM (Digital Elevation Model) shapefile and grid datasets can be added to BASINS before or after the BASINS project has been created.
The National Elevation Dataset (NED), a higher resolution elevation grid, tiled by HUC boundary is also available.
The GIRAS landuse/landcover has been removed from the core data and is now available seperately as a shapefile for each HUC.
The SWAT model in BASINS requires STATSGO data.
