Water: Polluted Runoff
Guidance in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed: Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems
More than two million homes in the Chesapeake Bay watershed rely on decentralized systems to treat their wastewater, and that number is expected to rise to more than three million homes in 20 years. Even properly functioning conventional septic systems contribute significant amounts of nitrogen to the Bay—approximately 12.5 million pounds per year overall. If implemented widely, the implementation measures in this chapter will significantly reduce this load through a new wave of next generation technologies and management practices.
